Hurricane Katrina was a storm that should not have caused as much damage as it did. Hurricane Katrina was category one when it made landfall in the state of Florida and was only a category three storm when it made landfall at the Louisiana-Mississippi border (Zimmerman). The weak infrastructure and physical characteristics of cities like New Orleans experience a much greater impact than would normally be expected with a category three hurricane. 1,833 people were killed, the majority of whom were in Louisiana (CNN Library). The total damage to property, buildings, infrastructure, etc. was $108 billion, the most damage ever incurred by a hurricane in the United States (CNN Library). Seventy percent of all occupied housing in New Orleans were destroyed and hundreds of thousands were displaced from the city (CNN Library). Overall, Hurricane Katrina was one of the most devastating hurricanes in U.S. history and could have been avoided had actions been taken earlier and had infrastructure been better. The tropical depression that would become Hurricane Katrina began ââ¬Å"322 km southeast of the Bahamas on Aug. 23, 2005â⬠(Zimmerman). By August 24th, the depression had become a tropical storm (Zimmerman). Marketing Initiative Marketing Initiative Marketing Initiative is an act or step taken in advertising, packing, and/or selling designed to gain and/or maintain customers. It is created to help transfer goods for the producer to the consumer. I recently read an article about the Clear Channel Outdoor company and their launch of a new Hispanic marketing initiative. This article will be used as an example of a marketing initiative and how it may or may not work for the company. In the attached article the Clear Channel Outdoor company has created a new marketing initiative to try to gain a new customer base. Their current target audience seems to be the American public, which is not culture specific. Their new marketing initiative is an attempt to gain the Hispanic market in America. It is hard for me to say if this marketing initiative will be successful because they do not specify what they will be doing. However, I do feel that when you direct any type of advertising at a specific group it makes it more likely that that group will try you product. This type of advertising makes it more personal for the consumer. Once something is directed towards them it creates a feeling that the company understands them and understands their needs. Also a specific group is more likely to pay attention to an advertisement if they feel like they can relate to it or if it relates to them. Knowing this information I would have to say that the new marketing initiative has a very good chance of working for Clear Channel Outdoor. Marketing initiatives are very important for companies to maintain and gain a customer base. Companies must continuously try to create new marketing initiatives. Pen Names Pen Names Pen Names By Ali Hale A reader, who wishes to remain anonymous, uses his real name in his writing for a weekly newspaper, but is considering using a pen name for other work. He wrote: I have had heavy criticisms attached to my birth name, before my professional career [as a journalist] even started, and believe with a pen name I can have a fresh start. My question for you is this: When should a writer use a pen name? Should a writer use a pen name at all? What is a pen name? A ââ¬Å"pen nameâ⬠or ââ¬Å"nom de plumeâ⬠is a pseudonym used by an author. Sometimes itââ¬â¢s used to remain anonymous, but authors often donââ¬â¢t mind their pen names being known ââ¬â they just use different names for their writing in separate genres, to avoid confusing their readers. Professionals in other creative fields also use pseudonyms, but these arenââ¬â¢t called pen names; for example, an actor taking on a different name is using a ââ¬Å"stage nameâ⬠. The phrase ââ¬Å"nom de plumeâ⬠, as explained by Maeve in French Words for Writers was adapted from the French ââ¬Å"nom de guerreâ⬠ââ¬â a fictional ââ¬Å"war nameâ⬠. Famous people with pen names Authors throughout the centuries have used pen names. Youââ¬â¢ve probably heard of the following authors: George Orwell (real name Eric Arthur Blair) George Eliot (real name Mary Ann Evans) Lewis Carroll (real name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) And many writers today use pen names. For example, Alisa Zinovyevna Rosenbaum is the real name of Ayn Rand (she wrote the famous novel Atlas Shrugged, examining philosophical and political themes). Margaret Astrid Lindholm Ogden, a fantasy author, writes under two pen names: Megan Lindholm for her earlier, contemporary fantasy, and Robin Hobb for her epic, traditional fantasy books. Why use a pen name? Authors use pen names for a wide variety of reasons, which include: To remain anonymous (especially if producing a politically or religiously sensitive work) This is perhaps less common today, but sometimes occurs if a very personal or sexually explicit work is written. An example is the author Belle de Jour (who writes a blog Belle de Jour: diary of a London call girl and has had two books published based on the blog). Some people see this form of anonymity as a ploy to provoke media interest, as newspapers compete to discover the real identity of such authors. To change or conceal gender In the 18th century, many female authors used male pen names in order to be taken seriously. George Eliot is the most famous example, though the Bronte sisters all wrote under pen names too. This trend still continues in some genres today: for example, female fantasy or science fiction authors will often use a gender-neutral name (Robin Hobb) or use their initials (J.K. Rowling) as the genre has traditionally attracted more male readers and authors. A similar effect can be seen when male authors adopt a female pen name to write a chick lit or romance novel. To write across multiple genres Lewis Carroll also wrote mathematical textbooks under his real name (Charles Dodgson), so adopted a pen name for his childrenââ¬â¢s novels. Authors today who write in multiple genres will sometimes use a different name for each one, to avoid confusing readers. Others use alternative forms of their real name; for example, the author Iain Menzies Banks writes mainstream fiction under the name Iain Banks and science fiction as Iain M Banks. To recover from poor sales or reputation If, as in the question from our reader above, an authorââ¬â¢s real name has attracted criticism ââ¬â it may be worth considering changing to a pen name. Sometimes, the first few novels by a new author donââ¬â¢t sell well in bookshops, leading publishers to reject future submissions: changing to a pen name is often recommended in these circumstances. Holly Lisle suggests, in her FAQs about writing: Authors whose first three or so books have returns of fifty percent or more are out of the game. Publishers will stop buying from them not just your current publisher, but also the other publishers you might hope to sell to.â⬠¦ This is where pen names can be useful more than one author with bad numbers has started over with a new name, in essence becoming a first novelist again and acquiring a clean publishing history in the process. So should you use a pen name? If you are trying to build up a reputation in multiple genres, using a pen name (or several pen names) is probably a good idea. And if your real name (or current pen name) has attracted heavy criticism or negative publicity, switching to a new name could be a good way to recover. Even if people do know what your real name is, youââ¬â¢ll be referred to by your pen name and itââ¬â¢s likely that few people will make a connection with your previous writings. However, adopting a pen name means building up your reputation again from scratch ââ¬â which could be a particular problem for freelance writers. Youââ¬â¢ll still have all your experience and knowledge, but you may not want to use existing clippings of your writing which were published under your previous name. If youââ¬â¢re using a pen name in an attempt to remain anonymous, be aware that people are often insatiably curious when they suspect a secret ââ¬â you may well be ââ¬Å"discoveredâ⬠. In some cases, this can lead to great publicity, but if your client or publisher suspects you of trying to conceal a less-than-stellar past, it may backfire. Ultimately, only you can decide whether itââ¬â¢s best for you to adopt a pen name or not. In this context Greek authors, artists and sculptors simply took it for granted that Greek culture was superior to the cultures that could not demonstrate the advanced technologies that the Greeks possessed. Some cultures like the Egyptians, for example, had great cities, stone monuments and works of literature which earned the respect of the Greeks, but those who preferred a nomadic lifestyle were regarded simply as ââ¬Ëbarbarians.ââ¬â¢ Very often this label was used in ignorance, and it served to make as big a distance as possible in Greek minds between those who were within its extended territorial reach, and those who were beyond it. In short, all that was culturally good and proper and admirable was Greek, and all that the barbarian cultures represented was depicted in opposite terms. In modern language we would call this a stereotype, and then, as now, there was some truth in this stereotype, but it was by no means the full story. This paper explores the way that Greeks define and depict themselves and the barbarians through various artefacts including literature, painting and sculpture. It covers the values and the virtues of Greek and of barbarian as seen from the Greek point of view, both positive and negative, as demonstrated through actions and outward appearance. Hall points out that there were hundreds of tragedies written for fifth century Athenian theatre and that more than half of them introduce barbarian characters, choruses and locations, even when there is no need for these details in the main plot: ââ¬Å"Supernumerary foreign characters or choruses, and the ubiquity of allusions to the other, inferior, world beyond Hellas, therefore provide evidence that barbarians were a particular preoccupation of the Greek tragedians. 1 Hall identifies two main areas of difference between Greeks and barbarians. The first is political, thanks to the Greek commitment to democracy as a form of government for a modern state: ââ¬Å"Greeks are democratic and egalitarian; the barbarians are tyrannical and hierarchicalâ⬠2 although this conveniently overlooks the fact that Greek wealth and leisure to depended upon a large underclass of slaves who were mostly non-Greeks. The second area of difference that Hall observes is harder to define, and lies in the area of psychology and attitude, whereby the barbarian is cast in the role of ââ¬Å"other.â⬠T his notion permeates Greek thinking and this kind of polarization is a tendency which has been present in European history ever since. It is important to remember that our modern understanding of race and nationhood may not exactly match the way that these ideas were understood in early Greek history. Greece was made up of a collection of small city states, and they had ties with the center of Greek culture in Athens, but they also had ties with the geographical areas surrounding them, some of which differed greatly from the Athenian norms. Different Greek cities had different perspectives. Geary notes that the fifth century Greek historian Herodotus indulges in a certain amount of simplistic ââ¬Å"us and themâ⬠thinking, but at the same time probes the backgrounds of the peoples such as the Persians whom the Greeks encountered as enemies in long and bitter wars: ââ¬Å"Herodotus invented both history and ethnography.â⬠3 This is not, however ethnography as we would under stand it today.
